Janet said, "when I get 'that' feeling, you would think a lorry is coming straight towards me, but there is nothing. I might be at home doing the ironing. I might be in the hairdressers, or I might be out for a walk. It just happens all on its own. I don't know how to stop it".
Another client Ann, described her panic attacks. She said "logically, I don't mind when plans are changed at the last minute, but for some unknown reason, I go into a panic attack. Every Friday afternoon, my husband and I go shopping. Last Friday, my husband, who is a plumber came home and said that we couldn't go to the supermarket, because he had an urgent job to do for a customer. My heart started racing as if a bull was charging me. I 'flipped' and my logical mind just switched off. I wasn't angry, I just felt as though I couldn't cope. It took me an hour or so to calm down and then I wondered why I reacted that way".
Mary was extremely self-conscious. Many times a day she felt as though all eyes were looking at her, even though, logically, she could see that they weren't. Many people suffer feelings like these and they are nothing to do with logic. They are psychological symptoms and they are extremely wearing. There is no way that you can 'logic' them away. I introduced Janet, Ann and Mary to a mental routine that gradually reduced their symptoms until they disappeared.
